Cut at the right week of the season and dried slowly in the dark, so it keeps the colour it had standing in the row.
This is the large bunch — full-height stems for a floor vase, a mantelpiece, or a table where it is meant to be the arrangement rather than part of one. It will hold its scent and its purple for a year, and considerably longer than that if you keep it out of the window.
The stems are this long because Grosso is a lavandin, bred for height. It is the reason we cut this cultivar for drying and leave the shorter English lavenders for the kitchen.
Looking after it
- No water. Dried stems will rot at the base.
- Not in a sunny window. This is the one thing that undoes dried lavender — direct sun bleaches purple to grey faster than anywhere else in the house.
- Run your fingers up the stems when the scent quietens. Crushing a few buds opens more oil.
- It will shed a little. Most people keep what falls and put it in a bowl.
